As a concerned constituent and someone who has been affected by Spina Bifida, I am writing to respectfully request that you oppose sequestration cuts to disability programs, such as the National Spina Bifida Program.
Without Congressional action, sequestration is scheduled to go into effect on March 1st. Programs such as the National Spina Bifida Program at the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would be severely impacted.
Spina Bifida is the nation's most-common, permanently disabling birth defect, affecting approximately 166,000 individuals and 3,000 pregnancies every year, of which an estimated 1,500 are Spina Bifida. People with Spina Bifida face a host of difficulties--including, but not limited to--physical, developmental, educational, and vocational challenges.
The National Spina Bifida Program supports critical programs, research, and services for those who live with Spina Bifida. Since its creation, it has done great work to improve the quality of life for those living with Spina Bifida and sequestration could ultimately undo the Program’s past work.
I hope you will work with your colleagues to find ways to reduce the deficit without cuts to important disability programs, such as the National Spina Bifida Program. I appreciate your attention to this matter and thank you in advance for your support of the National Spina Bifida Program.
