Living with Spina Bifida

Man_in_GymSpina Bifida is not one condition; it is a multitude of problems that affect the mind, the body, and the spirit.  No two cases of Spina Bifida are ever the same.  SBA offers support and essential information to those 70,000 Americans who live with Spina Bifida and their families.

New doors have opened for people with Spina Bifida thanks to advancements in treatment and prevention.  Those born with this challenging birth defect are living longer, more productive lives than was dreamed of just 20 years ago.  All of life's joys and problems are part of living with Spina Bifida-going to school, working, raising a family, spending time with friends-but there are also challenges that are unique to people with Spina Bifida.

One of the most unique challenges that potentially faces those with Spina Bifida is a latex allergy. While the cause of the allergy is unknown, one theory is it develops because of the early, intense and constant exposure to rubber products through numerous surgeries, diagnostic examinations, and bladder and bowel programs.

To help children and young adults learn how to better manage their health, SBA has developed SPINabilities: A Young Person's Guide to Spina Bifida. SBA also offers a wide variety of other publications through its National Resource Center, such as the Health Guide for Adults with Spina Bifida, to help manage and explain the unique conditions potentially related to the birth defect.
