My son was born with Spina Bifida with tethered cord. He had no symptoms except for the dimple on his back. His first MRI was done at the age of 8 months and he was operated at the age of 10 months. He is 8 years old now and his physical parameters are fine. He is a very good sportsman and has been doing very rigorous skating. However, he has not gained 100 % control over his bladder and rectum. I am not sure it is because of some medical problem, or if he is too lazy to go to the toilet. If he is reminded, he does not wet his pants, and he does go to the toilet on his own. Only once in two months or so he passes motion in his pants in school. His Urodynamic study has been done and there seems to be no abnormality detected. His MRI was repeated last year and the MRI shows tethered cord again. His sports performance seems to be getting better and there seems to be no deterioration in his bladder and rectum situation. Kindly advise if we need to go for surgery or what next for us. |

I have a question about Spina Bifida that may not have a well-researched answer. I’ve read that the mother of a child with Spina Bifida has an increased risk of having another child with Spina Bifida, but is there any paternal link? If the father of a child with Spina Bifida remarries and his new wife becomes pregnant, is there any increased risk of Spina Bifida for her child? |

I am a Psychologist working in a mental health institution in Portugal. We have recently received a patient with severe behavior modification and impaired cognitive functioning. He is 16 years old and until now he has been considered a "normal adolescent". Some testing is being done and the doctor discovered that he suffers from Spina Bifida, something that until now nobody had known. Could this disease be related to the cognitive and behaviour modification I´ve told you about? |

Our son, age l7, has recently been diagnosed with Occulta. We were told by a specialist that if he was going to have Spina Bifida, this was the any type to have, and that he can live a normal life. However, my son still complains of back problems and recently he was at a Camp in the U.S. and put out his back again. My son is an excellent basketball player. His goal is BASKETBALL and he is very, very good. If he's already been complaining of back problems, what could we do? Is he making his back worse by playing in competitive sports? What can we give him nutritionally (supplements), other treatments, or clinical trials, to help him ease the pain? |

I am 65 years old and have just been informed by my "new" doctor that I have Spina Bifida. It was detected through blood tests ordered by this doctor. This news today was rather alarming that I would have had it since birth. I have had no indication or obvious signs over the years to indicate I had Spina Bifida. At my age, what should I be more informed or careful when I do things? Will it affect me to a greater degree later in life? Any information, pertaining to the discovery of this birth defect later in life, would be appreciated. |
