Prenatal Issues
Background
- A planned or unplanned pregnancy brings you to your local healthcare provider for care. You have undergone a routine ultrasound and have been politely asked to wait for the doctor. Your doctor has the daunting task of telling you that there is a problem with the baby. A sea of emotion takes over for some, others become frozen and numb. The doctor describes statistics and potential risks and outcomes. You may be referred to a genetics counselor for follow-up.
- Couples may be faced with decisions regarding termination of the pregnancy or to continue with a high risk pregnancy. Many call upon family and friends for support. A spiritual advisor may be helpful during this stressful time. Some couples become withdrawn and need time to comprehend what is happening.
- Many adults living with Spina Bifida go on to have children of their own.
