National Survey of the Spina Bifida Community
The Spina Bifida Association (SBA) conducted its biannual National Survey of the Spina Bifida Community in November to evaluate the impact of its programs. Results indicate that endeavors to raise awareness about folic acid produced a small increase in 2007. This encourages us to re-double our efforts to educate.
Key Findings on Folic Acid Awareness
- Of the women at risk of having a baby with Spina Bifida, 66% reported their health care provider had recommended taking folic acid every day to reduce their chances of a neural tube defect. This is a slight increase from the last national survey.
Key Findings on Folic Acid Consumption
- Of the women who take folic acid, 37% indicated that they consume the daily recommended amount of 400 mcg of folic acid. This is a slight increase from the previous survey.
Next Survey
SBA plans to repeat this survey this month and looks forward to having you as a participant. For more updates, please check www.spinabifidaassociation.org.
