eInsights - May 2010Pre-conference Programming to Highlight Employment for Adults with Spina BifidaEvery year the Spina Bifida community gathers to learn the latest information on research, catch up with old friends, and meet new ones at SBA’s National Conference. One mechanism that brings these memorable connections is Adult Day, a day which brings together community leaders and individuals to learn about issues that matter to them. This year’s Adult Day convenes on June 27 and will focus on employment. Employment issues remain a central concern for adults with Spina Bifida and in this difficult economy it’s even more important to stay informed. Whether you wish to re-enter the workforce, seek career advancement, or want to prepare for employment for the first time, Adult Day 2010 is for you. “Outreach about folic acid is one of the key efforts we undertake as a partner in this vital coalition. At the cost of just a few cents a day, birth defects like Spina Bifida can be reduced by up to 70% simply by taking a multi-vitamin,” says Sara Struwe, COO of SBA and Acting Project Director of NCFA. This year the Youth and Adult Alliance and the Conference Planning Committee have lined up a strong list of experts in the field of employment and career development, highlighted by an opening keynote address and follow-up concurrent session by Joyce Bender, President and CEO of Bender Consulting Services, a nationally known technology consulting company focused on providing career opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Following the morning keynote address, Ms. Bender will provide a breakout session entitled “Be Prepared.” Additional sessions are on resume writing, interviewing skills, SSDI work incentive programs, and the importance of attitude and self-perception in gaining and maintaining employment. The sessions planned will be informative and inspiring.
