Disneyland Hosts SBA's 38th National Conference

Plans for SBA's 38th National Conference are underway and this year promises to be an amazing and educational experience. The National Conference brings together children and adults with Spina Bifida, their families, physicians, nurses, and other clinicians who have the unique opportunity to gain insight about the latest medical care and network on various issues that affect their lives and professions. This year, the Conference travels to the West Coast to the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California where you and your family can learn, meet new friends, and have fun while enjoying the world-famous Disney experience, fine dining, tours, and shopping.

If you have never been to an SBA conference, past attendees will tell you that being there generates long lasting memories. The halls buzz with chatter between old friends and colleagues catching up, exhibitors showcasing their latest products and services, and attendees engaging in workshops and sessions designed just for them. For three days every summer, we gather as a community in a fun place that leaves an enduring influence on how we work to enhance the lives of all affected by Spina Bifida.

There is something for everyone, and SBA"s Kids!Camp offers great fun and excitement. Kids with Spina Bifida and their siblings always want to come back the following year, and it seems that every year moms and dads can't resist saying "yes."

Why should you attend?

  • Interacting and sharing information with everyone from those living with Spina Bifida to health professionals and product manufacturers can have a lasting impact.
  • Conference sessions examine different issues affecting you and your family.
  • Disneyland is a great place to bring your kids or for you to be a kid again yourself.

What is being offered at this Conference?

  • Dr. N. Scott Adzick, one of the primary investigators for the Management of Myelomenigocele Study (MOMS), will provide an overview of the first finding from this groundbreaking research into Spina Bifida treatment.
  • Practical workshops address your areas of interest, some of which include bladder and bowel issues; overcoming educational challenges; assistive technology; and orthopedic and mobility challenges.
  • Adult Day sessions will focus on improving health, safety, happiness, and well-being through action.
  • Expanded parent chats early in the Conference offer an opportunity for peer-to-peer interaction and support.
  • More products and services on exhibit than ever!
  • One-day pre-Conference programming in Spanish will be available. For registration details, please call 800-621-3141.

2010 Schedule At A Glance
While the exact content for this year's Conference is still being drawn up, you can review the schedule-at-a-glance from the 2010 Conference to gain further insight as to the types of similar sessions that have been offered in the past.

Ideas Are Welcome
SBA takes great paints to ensure that we present the most relevant information to its attendees. If you would like to see a certain topic presented at the Conference, please contact Robin Austin at raustin@sbaa.org with your ideas.

Financial Aid
If you would like to attend the Conference, but need a little financial support to help, there are several avenues to pursue. Some SBA Chapters offer scholarships or assist individuals who want to attend the National Conference. Contact your local Chapter to investigate this possibility.

Many individuals—adults and family members—have successfully sought grants to attend the National Conference. You can check with your local state council on developmental disabilities. Below is a list of organizations that may also offer assistance.
