Ways to Give

Your gift today can and will make a difference to all those impacted by Spina Bifida.

Mere words cannot express what SBA has done for me. It not only helps provide programs related to my condition, but it provides a feeling of empowerment and kinship between the 166,000 in the U.S. who are affected by this birth defect. I have had the opportunity to make friendships that will last a lifetime. That is not something you can put a value to. – Will Dickey, Adult with Spina Bifida

Ways to Give

Your gift today will help fund much needed research into the complexities of Spina Bifida, shape public policy on crucial issues affecting our community, deliver vital education to individuals, families, and healthcare professionals across the nation, and provide support to those in need who are living with or affected by Spina Bifida.

Give Through Your Workplace

Workplace giving is an effortless and impactful way to support the Spina Bifida Association. By participating in workplace giving programs, you have the opportunity to contribute to our mission through automatic payroll deductions or employer matching programs. Your generous donation not only helps us continue our vital work but also demonstrates your commitment to making a positive change for individuals living with Spina Bifida. Together, through workplace giving, we can create a brighter future for those affected by this condition.

Employee giving campaigns are held by the federal government and most state, county, and city governments throughout the United States as well as by many employers in the public and private sectors. By giving at the office, you can avoid the hassle of writing and mailing a check, minimizing processing costs and ensuring that SBA can maximize the impact of your gift. It’s also an affordable and convenient way to give. You can spread your contribution out over the entire year, enabling you to make a larger gift through small monthly payroll deductions. All donations made through your workplace are tax-deductible too.

Employer Matching Programs

Employee matching gifts provide a unique opportunity to maximize the impact of your individual donation. When you make a personal contribution to the Spina Bifida Association, your employer may offer a matching gift program, doubling or even tripling the value of your donation. By taking advantage of this generous benefit, you can amplify the positive change you’re making and help us further our mission to support individuals with Spina Bifida. Your support, combined with your employer’s match, will have a powerful and lasting effect on the lives of those in our community. Check with your human resources department to see if your employer has such a program or try our tool below.

Creating Healthier Communities/Combined Federal Campaign

Community Health Charities (CHC) unites caring donors in the workplace with the nation’s most trusted health charities. If your employer partners with CHC, look for the Spina Bifida Association’s listing. If you are a federal employee or member of the military, you’re eligible to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign – the largest and most successful workplace giving drive in the world. SBA participates in the CFC as a member of CHC. To include SBA among the charities you wish to support, simply use our CFC code #10559.

United Way

You can include the Spina Bifida Association as a write-in for your local United Way campaign.

Donor Advised Funds, Stock, & IRA Charitable Rollovers

To support SBA’s mission and enjoy tax advantages, consider making a charitable  contribution through appreciated stock, and IRA Charitable Roller, or via a Donor Advised Fund (DAFS).

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual funds

Benefits

  • You receive a charitable income tax deduction equal to the current fair market value of the securities on the date of the gift, provided you’ve held them for more than one year.
  • If you sell appreciated securities, you’ll likely pay capital gains tax on the increase in current fair market value over the original cost which could cause you to lose a portion of the proceeds. By gifting those same securities to March of Dimes, you’ll avoid paying capital gains tax and March of Dimes will be able to liquidate those securities and receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale.
  • The gift is made by simply instructing your broker to wire-transfer the securities directly from your account to March of Dimes.
  • Stock gifts are excellent ways to make current gifts or satisfy multi-year pledges.

How to give stock and non-cash assets:

To make a gift of securities to the Spina Bifida Association, please provide your broker with the following information to facilitate the transfer:

Spina Bifida Association Address: 2000 Duke Street, Suite 300, Alexandria, VA 22314
Spina Bifida Association Federal Tax ID #: 58-1342181
Spina Bifida Association DTC #: 0057
Spina Bifida Association Account #: 685-22249-1-1
Spina Bifida Association Broker: Edward Jones

Donor advised funds

Benefits

  • Easily contribute to a wide range of assets. Assets generally accepted include cash, stock, mutual fund shares, cryptocurrencies, and a multitude of non-cash assets.
  • Maximize potential tax benefits. You receive an immediate income tax deduction at the time you make the contribution. If you contribute appreciated assets to the fund, you can eliminate capital gains taxes when those assets are sold by the fund.
  • Invest your donation for tax-free growth. Once you have funded your DAF, you may recommend an investment strategy for your account, potentially growing your account and providing you with more dollars to grant to charity.
  • Simplify record keeping and organization. With a DAF, you don’t have to keep track of every gift acknowledgement from every charity you support—just the receipts from your DAF contributions.
  • Support your legacy planning. You can incorporate your DAF into your estate plan by making a bequest in your will to the DAF sponsor or by making the sponsor a beneficiary of a retirement plan or life insurance policy. Many DAF sponsors also allow you to pass the remaining funds in your account at your death to heirs or your favorite charities.

IRA Charitable Rollover (with a button that says “Learn More” and clicks off to the listed benefits below):

To qualify:

  • You must be at least 70.5 or older at the time of the gift.
  • You’re allowed to transfer to charity up to $100,000 per year. Couples who each have an IRA may rollover up to $100,000 per year from each IRA.
  • The rollover must come from your IRA. Rollovers from 401(k), 403(b) and other retirement plans do not qualify.
  • The rollover must be made directly from your IRA to SBA. Funds that are transferred to you and then gifted to March of Dimes don’t qualify.

Benefits:

  • You avoid paying income tax on the amount distributed to SBA.
  • The rollover satisfies your required minimum distribution which begins at age 70.5 (but if your 70th birthday is July 1, 2019, or later, distributions must begin at age 72).
  • The rollover is made by simply instructing your IRA plan administrator to transfer funds directly from your IRA account to SBA.
  • Rollovers are excellent ways to make annual gifts or satisfy multi-year pledges.

If you’re not in a position to consider an IRA Charitable Rollover during your lifetime, leaving IRA/retirement plan assets to SBA at your death will shelter those assets from erosion due to income taxes and possibly estate taxes. This is accomplished by simply naming SBA as a beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA/retirement plan using a Beneficiary Designation Form which you can obtain from your IRA plan administrator.
