Medicare Competitive Bidding Could Affect People with Spina Bifida
Medicare’s Competitive Bidding Program, which seeks to cut costs by limiting the number of durable medical equipment, prosthetic, orthotic, and supply providers, is moving forward with plans to include ostomy and urological supplies. That approach is especially concerning for these products, which are not interchangeable commodities but are individually selected and clinically prescribed based on a person’s specific medical needs. The program is currently scheduled to take effect January 1, 2028.
For people with Spina Bifida who rely on urological and ostomy supplies, changes to the program could affect access to the products they need to manage their health, independence, and daily lives. CMS estimates that the national program could result in just 5 suppliers for urological supplies (down from approximately 190) and 6 suppliers for ostomy supplies (down from approximately 74) serving Medicare beneficiaries across the country.
These supplies are not one-size-fits-all. The right products can depend on an individual’s anatomy, clinical needs, lifestyle, and care plan. Limiting supplier choice could make it harder for people to access the products they rely on to remain healthy and independent.
Get Local. Get Vocal.
Now is the time to make your voice heard.
During the August and fall congressional recesses, Members of Congress are back in their home communities. This is an important opportunity for people with Spina Bifida, family members, friends, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and other advocates to contact their elected officials and explain why access to individualized, medically necessary supplies matters.
One Letter. Three Offices. Your Voice.
Advocates can complete one letter and send it to all three of their federal representatives — their U.S. Representative and both U.S. Senators.
You don’t have to be a person who uses ostomy or urological supplies to speak up. Anyone who cares about the health, independence, and quality of life of people with Spina Bifida can be an advocate.
